The cheesesteak is a Philadelphia invention created by Pat Olivieri in the 1930s. In classic Italian fashion, Olivieri grilled rib eye steak and served it on an Italian roll. Olivieri was a hot dog vendor, and this new sandwich spread through the rumor mill of the local cabbies. He added cheese in the 1940s, and traditional toppings include fried onions, peppers, and mushrooms.
Olivieri opened up Pat's King of Steaks, and a competitor, Geno, opened up across the street. Today when you visit Philly, the natives will ask, "Are you a Pat's or a Geno's?" You can't visit Philly without having at least one cheesesteak—and on National Cheesecake Day, you'll find quite a few deals. Enjoy!
